WORKSHOPS

From the very beginning contact, the planning and discussion of shared goals was friendly, orderly and complete. We had never hosted a resident artist with Susanšs broad professional background... Approximately 90 visual arts students participated in making and decorating clay instruments under Susan's direction and in cooperation with the high school art teacher... The success rate was very high and the creation of a playable instrument, very important to the student's creative process... We have for some time encouraged familiarity with new and contemporary music and I feel this residency greatly facilitated that acceptance... and turned on kids in a totally positive cross-disciplinary adventure. Jay Andersen, Executive Director Grand Marais Art Colony, MN 12/2000 Fall, 1998: "Susan demonstrated her expertise and professionalism during her visits to my classroom. She was always prepared, knowledgeable and enthusiastic [and] brings the rich background, knowledge, mastery and ability of her craft. She works well with adults and connects with students. She shares her talents in a manner that is easy to understand and learn from." Renita Williams, 3rd grade teacher Franklin Ave. School, Los Angeles, CA 4/99: "Dear Susan: You are the best teacher. Susan, I like when you play the recorder with us. Susan I like when you play your big guy. I like when you play your little guy. Susan you are cool." Kassandra Guerrero, 3rd grade Inner City Arts, Los Angeles, CA "Dear Susan, You are the bestest teacher at Inner City Arts. I liked the day when you let my class and I play the recorder. I also liked the time you showed us your cool instruments. If it wasn't for you I couldn't of learned a new song. I will miss you a lot..." Adali Olivares, 3rd Grade Inner City Arts, Los Angeles, CA "I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your incredible concert at Cabrillo High School on June 2, 1998. All of the students who were fortunate enough to participate benefitted from your unique performance with your awesome collection of didgeridoos! Your playing the neon didgeridoo provided a nearly religious experience with all of its lightning and visual thunder effects!! Also your explanations provided just the right amount of science without boring the students. Thank you again for your generous sharing of your unique talents." Karena Massengill, Fine & Performing Arts Dept. Chair Cabrillo High School, San Pedro, CA |
